I apologize for disappearing on you this past week. We spent a week on the island of Lefkada, in the Ionian Sea. Since I now have over 2K emails to wade through, I hope you’ll forgive me if I’m uncharacteristically brief and just share a few photos of this lovely island.
As always, we stayed at Mira Resort. Our friends, Romina and Manolis, who also own the downtown boutique hotel Boschetto, have built this exquisite place that overlooks the Adriatic Sea.
The views are spectacular, especially at sunset:
From our room, we could see all the way to St. John beach (Agios Ioannis) with its windmills and kite surfers:
The food was surprisingly good, with a couple of high-end restaurants. One of them is right next to a paragliding spot, making for a rather unusual lunch experience. One moment you’re enjoying this:
And the next, you’re seeing someone literally next to you do this:
Every afternoon, we visited the city of Lefkada. Like the rest of the Ionian islands, it has a distinctively Italian feel to it.
This is especially obvious in church architecture, which is quite different from the Byzantine style celebrated in Greece.
Lefkada is plagued by frequent earthquakes that often exceed 6.5 on the Richter scale. As a result, few truly old buildings survive. The exception is some centuries-old churches, since these were built to higher standards than normal houses. Some have stunning interiors, like this tiny St. Nicholas church in the city center. While I was taking this photo, they were preparing for an “artoclasia” – the blessing of five loaves of sweet bread that are then distributed to the congregation.
It was mostly the ice cream that appealed to the wee one, though. And she had one each and every day, making this her best-holiday-ever!
