This is a guest post by the makers of Write!; a new app developed specifically for writers who wish to avoid Word’s or Scrivener’s clutter and distractions. I have tried it out and it works as advertised. If you’re on the lookout for a new writing app, check it out!
Write! – No-Distraction Writing App for Your Productivity
There are over 100 different kinds of text editors available on Windows and macOS. There are some alternatives to Microsoft Office for Linux OS, while Linux users do not have such a wide variety of choices when it comes to finding a light minimalist text editor.
Being a professional or an amateur writer, a student, a person who just needs to make some notes, there is always a need to write down some important stuff. For this purpose, there’s a new app you can install on any of your machines and use for writing texts of any kind. Write! App was developed with a distraction-free environment in mind, where users can focus only on what is important at any particular moment.
Introducing Write!
Write! has an uncluttered and simple working space where you can create articles, blog posts, books or technical notes and instructions. You can write texts of any kind, the app even guides you in the differences between writing a book or an email, and it has all the word processor features you need.
One of the most valuable features of this app is the ability to save the work to the Cloud storage, which can be easily accessible from any PC or platform. This particularly is something many text editors lack because keeping switching between laptop and computer and carrying a pen drive full of documents is not convenient at all. With Write! you can access your documents anywhere without using extra devices.
Focus Mode
Another unique feature is the Focus mode, which fades out all paragraphs except for the one you are currently working on to stay in the flow and focus. This helps you to focus on the paragraph that you are currently editing rather than getting distracted by other paragraphs. To enable it, View > Enable Focus Mode.
For many writers, it can be hard to complete their daily goals or assignments on time for students, so you can now set your daily goals and track your productivity with Write!’s productivity counters.
Apart from markdown support, Write! also provides you with the options to checking Google, finding the information with Wikipedia and finding synonyms and antonyms using Thesaurus. You can also translate words to different languages at the same time by just doing right-click on the word and choosing the appropriate option.
Typing Sound
While searching in settings, you can find a pretty cool feature, which enables “Typing Sound”. Whenever you want to concentrate, put on your headphones and enable the typing sound, this sound provides with a calm atmosphere and helps to concentrate on the work only. This feature not only had the common, ‘mechanical’ option but also the ‘typewriter’ option, which some might find to be even better than the ‘mechanical’ one.
Spellchecking
Write! also has the option of adding words to spellchecker dictionary by selecting a particular word and pressing Ctrl+F7, which is quite useful because sometimes it gets pretty annoying when you write something that is not in a dictionary like people’s names, places, modern words and etc. and the words become underlined with red. This feature helps to avoid mistakes of one’s “own” words and make the dictionary more personalized.
Theme Customization
If you are bored of the common white background with black letters, Write! provides you with “Switch to Dark Theme” option to change the theme to a black background with white letters. But, it’s up to personal preferences.
If you don’t like to keep using a mouse to open settings, Write! is well-equipped with shortcut keys options to get you to a particular section in settings, which saves time, prevents you from distractions and becomes convenient. The shortcuts can be set up accordingly to user’s needs. To replace or add some, press F1 and choose one or a few from the list of shortcuts.
Some people may like the additional Write!’s option to directly post their work on social media, Medium or sharing via email.
Importing and exporting your files is also easy and convenient with Write!, which becomes sometimes messy in big word processors. Also, it backs up your word for you automatically on the Cloud, so that you can access it easily from anywhere, and with unlimited Ctrl+Z feature change back the document to any destination, starting from the last changes to its creation.
Write! is perfect when you are writing with a team – you can save the document on the tool and share the unique link to your collaborators, who can then make changes to the document on the fly.
Pricing
Right now, you can get Write! for just $17 (normal price: $20). Check it out on the Write! app website!
Wow! This is interesting, I’m curious to check it out. Like many here, I’m a diehard for Word. Would you personally give up using Word to write your books in? I’m curious. 🙂
I haven’t found the right tool to entice me, but then again I didn’t have to buy Word (I’m using an older version that came with a company licence). Write!’s price tag makes it a great alternative for someone on a tight budget.
Interesting. I’m using Word 2007 on my desktop. It came as a disk when I purchased one of my computers years ago. I love it and don’t prefer the newer versions. I’ve used that disk in 4 laptops since until I got my Surface Pro 3 laptop which I love and has not disk drive and now have to renew Office 365 annually. I still write my books on my desktop with the older version. And recently got a message popup there that as of October there will be no more updates for that version because after 10 years that’s it! 🙁
I hate it when they do that. If it were up to me, I’d stick to Windows XP and Office 2007 forever 🙂
Amen to that! 🙂
Hello!
You can try the app out, there is a 7-day money-back guarantee and if you feel like it doesn’t fit your needs, you can get your money back.
So, Word with a few tweaks. 🙂
With an emphasis on mobiles. And some fewer distracting bells and whistles. And a far healthier price tag 🙂
Interesting, Nicolas. I’m a Word user ad I’m sticking to it for now.
Fair enough; I’m much the same, actually. I do know a lot of people who can’t stand Word, though, so… 🙂
I’m a Word fan, Nicholas, and hard to budge, but one day I might try one of these programs. I’m waiting for the software the plugs into my internal hard drive and reads my mind. 🙂
Let me know if you find that. I’m getting tired of typing with one hand because the wee one’s on my lap 😀
She must boost your word count tremendously! 😀
Lol – it’s plummeted all right. But she’s worth it 😀
Have to say that I like the idea of the typing sound. Fading out other paragraphs could be very useful.
There are some nice features there 🙂
Looks very nice indeed. I especially like that ‘focus’ mode.
Best wishes, Pete.
Does what the name says 🙂
Sounds interesting! I’m a diehard Scrivener user, but I used to be a diehard Word user too! ? Will check it out – thanks! ?
It lacks many of Scrivener’s features, so I’m curious as to what you’ll make of it!
That video is SO FAST! LOL! From what I saw after several viewings, I probably wouldn’t replace Scrivener with Write, but it does look like it might be more flexible than Word. Wish there was a trial version to try-before-you-buy (although the price is amazing).
I passed it on to my son who’s looking for a writing program–and was unimpressed with my Scrivener demo–Kids! LOL! Will let you know how it turns out. Thanks! 😉
Lol – don’t be too harsh on the lad. I’m like your son (just a little older), as Scrivener didn’t do it for me either 🙂
Is Write! for use on a desktop PC? or just for a tablet?
I see that the cloud storage can be accessed via PC.
Both. I’ve used it on my PC.
Currently, Write! is available only as a desktop app. But the team is working to make it available for mobile versions.
