You may have noticed I’ve been unusually silent in the past few days. The reason is that I took a much-needed break to a nearby island, Evia. However, it turned out I had accidentally stumbled upon the land that time forgot: no Internet anywhere—including our hotel and the one café in the area—and a very spotty cell connection that made receiving emails almost impossible.
So, there was nothing left to do but go to the beach, where the strong winds made me wish I was kite surfing. The only other people around were grandmothers holding meatball-filled Tupperware and chasing kids who were too busy splashing in the sea to eat. A scene straight out of my childhood; so much so that I half-expected a pterodactyl to screech down from the skies (yes, I’m that old). Mercifully, we only got a flock of seagulls.
Anyway, we’re now back so we can get some proper sleep (sleeping with a toddler is never good for you) and run our washing machine to death with all the washing up we need to do. Here are some photos to get you in the mood:
Oh, I’d be happy to have no internet for a week (even two weeks) in such a beautiful location.
It was pretty nice, even though there was a ton of things to do as soon as I returned 🙂
So nice to hear you had a little getaway with your family Nicholas. We could all use a time out. Gorgeous photos. 🙂
Thanks! Now I need a time out from my time out, of course 😀
Omg, isn’t that always the way? Lol 🙂
A lovely vacation, I am sure. Now, if you’re anything like me, you need a vacation to rest up from this one.
You know me so well 😀
Haha!
Unplugging whether consciously planned or by accident, is a very wonderful thing. 😀 … love the grandmothers with the meatballs! 😀
They’re more than happy to share, too 😀
Hi Nicholas,
At first I was going to state I was sorry for having to live without technology. However, your description of the area and the pictures, well….it must of been awesome to relax and enjoy the area.
BTW, I plugged your post on Amazon marketing on a recent blog. Check it out.
Welcome back to the world of technology.
Thank you so much, Chuck! It’s good to be back 🙂
What a nice place to relax.
It really was 🙂
It looks wonderful Nicholas and your brain will thank you for the break from technology and online white noise… and lovely that you have a toddler now to share it with who sees it I am sure in a completely different way.. we all need a little retreat now and then.. x
How true! My glazed eyes thank me even more than my brain does. Thank you, Sally 🙂
It sounds both wonderful and horrible. I don’t think my family could go one day without technology. 🙂
Lol – having young ‘uns can have that effect on you 😀
I’ll bet it was wonderful though, Nicholas. Turning off the technology for a few days now and then is healthy, I think. And we often don’t do it, unless we haven’t a choice. Welcome back.
It was great. We’re thinking of going back in August, as we had to cut this break short because of the weather (a freakish storm broke out).
No beeps, chimes, or chirps? Sounds wonderful! Glad there were no pterodactyls! 😀
Well, there was the constant drone of cicadas, but I happen to love that, so we were good 🙂
???
What a wonderful- and silent- island 😀
PS: Your little daughter is soooo beautiful
Thank you! We like to think so 😀
Since I think I am looking at a lake in one of the photos, can I ask? Is it Limni Evias you went to? I’ve never been to that particular place but I’ve been to other parts and adored them all. My only problem with this island is it’s impossible to find your way around. Coming back from Steni once we couldn’t find Chalkida and get back to the mainland. We got lost as all road signs pointed to ‘North and South Evia’. HUH? Years later, we still laugh about it!!! Other than that, I hope you got rejuvenated somewhat and the views are fantastic!! Your little one is sooo cute! Enjoy the rest of the summer, and look out for the dinosaurs 🙂
It’s a local river. I don’t even know its name; the locals simply say, “the river.” The lack of any signage makes having a GPS imperative!
Ah, yes the perils of living without technology (I can completely relate since my lap-top finally gave up the ghost more than a month ago and since then I have only had the occasional use of my daughter’s laptop). That aside, the beach looks lovely and I could happily skip the remainder of our New Zealand winter (which has been a drab wet, freezing cold affair so far, sigh), just to lie on the sand with the sea shimmering near by and do nothing but enjoy, Great post Nicholas 🙂
Thanks! It’s so weird to think of you guys freezing down there!
Sounds like bliss!
Except for the hyperactive insomniac toddler we had to share our room with, it was 😀
I looked it up. Only 80k from Athens, and the second largest island, after Crete. I was surprised that it’s not a commuter haven, although it would need to have wi-fi!
Best wishes, Pete.
It’s surprisingly quiet, given its proximity to a city of almost 4 million. Maybe the locals’ desire to keep it that way explains the lack of wi-fi!
Think I might prefer the pterodactyls over gulls. At least the former are easy to spot and looked like they ate fish more than land animals. Gulls are just mean with their dive bombs, raiding coolers, and even snatching food out of your hand if you’re not looking.
“Pterodactyls ate my baby.” Great title for a song.
Can you do that since ‘dingoes are my baby’ is a thing?
Pterodactyls would kick dingo butt and eat any lawyer who suggests otherwise, so there’s that.
At the very least, they’d hire a T-Rex to eat the lawyer. They have a history of legal ingestion.
Yes! I want to go THERE!
Lol – why?! You already live in a tropical paradise!
