Lucy, my lovely blonde blogger/writer friend, recently had a guest post by Rachael Ritchey, on the subject of writing the perfect headline for your posts. It mentioned the Headline Analyzer; a free tool by CoSchedule that checks your title using a number of criteria, including:
- the ratio between common, uncommon, emotional and power words;
- the headline type;
- the character and word count;
- the number of keywords;
- the sentiment conveyed
It also offers a preview of the title in Google, and as an email subject. You can see below the results for this very post’s headline (sadly, not great), and check it out for yourself!
Interestingly enough, I also tried it out (and found it very helpful) for a non-fiction book I’ve been working on, with tips on how to use beats to show emotion in your writing. Thanks to feedback from the Headline Analyzer, the title will be, Perfect Beat: The Super-Easy Way to Write with Emotion.
Thanks, Nicholas, for the tip. I tried it out and will do so again. 🙂 — Suzanne
Yeah, I’ve heard of this one before it’s a good’un. I don’t use it but I do have a very specific methodology for headlines. And it works. But it’s sort of a mishmash of research. Great tip ?
Thank you! Means a lot, coming from the queen of blogs 🙂
Wait. What? Who’s that? What did I miss?!
Just calling them as I see them 🙂
Erm… ?? thank you that’s a huge compliment ?
Interesting, Nicholas. Heading over to play with headlines 🙂
Have fun! Be warned, though; it can be a tad addictive 🙂
I tried it – my headlines are lame (hahaha). I don’t think I’ll spend too much time over there, but it was a great tool to see in general what works and doesn’t 🙂
This is very intersting, I will certainly check it out. Sadly, I don’t think my headlines are very good… but maybe I’ll be able to get them better 🙂
I don’t give mine as much thought as I should, to be honest, but the analyzer was actually fun to use 🙂
Great – and useful – post. I’ll try it out.
Hope you have fun with it. It can get pretty addictive, mind you 🙂
Wow. It’s precise. Said my last headline had the right number of words but was too short. Guess I need longer words.
Lol – yes, it’s pretty anal about some things 😀
I just typed in the headline to the last post on my blog.
B+, 39%, and lots of zeros. Looks like I am in Headline Failure!
Best wishes, Pete.
Ha ha – sorry to hear that, Pete. On the plus side, that means there’s plenty of scope for improvement 🙂
Always room for improvement on my humble blog, old friend…
So many fun, little tools floating around out there.
I have come across some wonderfully imaginative tools lately. I’m sharing as fast as I can 🙂
Guessing your speed is down due to sleep deprivation. 😉
Lol – you’re not wrong there, buddy…
Thank you for another interesting and helpful tip. 🙂
A pleasure! Hope you find it useful 🙂
It does work because I have seen an uplift in my stats and that has to be the only reason – sigh! Great post Mr Rossis!
Lol – and I owe it all to you 🙂
Rachael you mean – lol! Sigh!
Well, yeah, but it’s you who gave her the podium from which she told us about it, so…
Lu, Nicholas is right. 🙂 Thank you!
