I woke up this morning and I had lost my smile and it wasn’t my fault and I looked everywhere and it was gone. Then I met a workman and a king and the best salesman in the world and a clown and no-one wanted to give me theirs. At school, I asked Miss to give me hers, but she gave us a pop quiz instead, and then no-one was smiling and…
A little boy wakes up in the morning and realizes he has lost his smile. After spending the entire day trying to find it, he learns the truth behind smiles: the only real smiles are the shared ones.
Runaway Smile is my first children’s book and it is finally here, after two long years of preparation! For a few more days, and just for the wonderful people following my blog, I have posted it online, where you can read it for free! If you enjoy it, feel free to share with your friends – or even get a copy for you or the wee ones in your life on Amazon or Createspace! 🙂
Update: Since some people have complained that they had trouble watching the slideshow online, you can now read the book on the children’s books page. Enjoy! 🙂
What a great concept Nicholas! Not easy writing children’s books let alone a picture book. Congratulations and I wish you every success! 😀
Thank you so much!! 🙂

FREE! An Adorable Book for Children by Nicholas C. Rossis, ‘Runaway Smile’
Congrats, Nicholas on your first children’s book! How exciting and wonderful. You have my admiration. Can’t wait to read it!
Thank you, Elle! I hope you enjoy it 🙂
No, no. If you are going to be so kind as to give me a Kindle edition, I can shelve my fears of an eventual hostile takeover by our machine overlords and learn to adapt to new technologies. I have downloaded a Kindle for PC and am ready to join the collective. Resistance is futile, I hear. And, again, thank you.
…but you may just have to tell me how exactly I can download it for free! I may be willing to tackle new technology…whether I am actually able to do it is another matter altogether.
Lol – I’ll take care of it, don’t worry 🙂
I totally understand what you mean. It took me the longest time to join the collective and I still resist. How it works out with the software.
I will buy a book reader device if for no other reason than to be able to get books for free from the library when I am stuck at home. I just haven’t figured out which reader works with my library. I’ve tried downloading the MP3 versions and I have learned that iPhones really, really hate anything not made by Apple.
Is anyone else having the problem of looking at the online ‘free’ version? I attempt to read a page and before I can get past a sentence or two, it has scrolled to the next page, and then the next. It looks like an interesting read, but the hopping around is making it a bit frustrating. Any suggestions?
I’m so sorry to hear that! 🙁
The problem is that, because of the illustrations, the mobi file is 23 MB, or I’d find a way to distribute that.
Theoretically, the auto-scroll is off. You can only advance to the next page if you pass the cursor over the images and click on the arrows that then appear.
“Theoretically” being the operative word here. 🙂
In my experience, it’s ridiculously hard to make a page appear the same way on to different computers! Especially if you include tablets and phones!
Tell you what, to apologize for the trouble, I’ll gift you a Kindle copy. All you need to do is send me your email through the contact form! 🙂
That is a most generous offer. Only one, tiny problem. I am the last hold out in the ‘Won’t read books on a digital format’ in the Western hemisphere. I own a laptop though. Can you read a Kindle book on a laptop? 🙂
Yes, absolutely! If you visit https://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000493771 you can download a free Kindle reader. 🙂
However, it seems to me that it might be easier for you to read a PDF version. So, I’ll send you a PDF link. If you click on it, you’ll be able to download the file and read it on your laptop. 🙂
How wonderful! Congrats on the children’s book, Nicholas 🙂
Thanks, Christy! 🙂

I had the privilege to beta read this gem by Nicholas Rossis and I can vouch for its excellence. Not only it’s delightful throughout, but I thought its ending was utterly sweet too. The moral of the story is simply priceless for the fanciful children’s minds and hearts. Love it, and the fab illustration gives it wings. A stellar combination!
How exciting! Congrats, Nicholas! I love this book; the ending is incredibly sweet and the whole thing utterly entertaining. Well done to your illustrator too, fabulous stuff and the red color ties well with the forthcoming Xmas season 🙂 May this gem travel smoothly and successfully across the vast seas of the indie world!!!!
Thank you so much, your kind words have made my day 🙂
Congrats! And good luck with this new venture!
Thanks, Ali! If you read the book, I hope you enjoy it 🙂

The cover is the best advertisement for this delightful book. <3

Nicholas Rossis is a friend. As a person he is both highly perceptive and sensitive, and as an author he is very talented; the perfect combo to undertake the knee-wobbling task of writing for children. His first children’s book, Runaway Smile, you can read for free. Read the post to find how. Congrats, Nicholas!
Congratulations, Nicholas! Right after your nameday, too! I bought and shared. Can’t wait to get it!
Thank you! I hope you liked it 🙂
The printers called on Friday; the book is ready for distribution. Hopefully, by the end of this week the Greek edition will be available at bookstores.

Nicholas, Cute story. Children will love it. I’ve reblogged it on my blog Musings On Live & Experience. 🙂
You’re always so supportive, thank you! Let’s hope you’re right about kids loving it 🙂
Wow, Nicholas, what a wonderful story. I just read the first 20 pages and it is beautiful: So funny with all the helping characters around. It is not easy to write a children’s book but you really found the important link. My biggest congrats! <3 <3 <3
Thank you so much, Erika! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 😀
I definitely did. I even identified with that little boy. Amazing how you are able to make yourself this boy in order to describe him, his thoughts and actions that way. Unfortunately I have no young kids around that are interested in or read English books It’s a shame!!!
I like to think there’s a little boy in all of us. Even in girls. 😉
Even in girls… 😉
Nicholas, I loved your book and have reblogged it. The quirky humour and wonderful flow of the story made it a fantastic journey to a happy ending. I’m sure your book will be a bestseller soon enough!
Thank you so much, I’m so glad you enjoyed it! 😀

Something for the children (and adults with a sense of humour) – a funny, cracking book by Nicholas C. Rossis about a boy who lost his smile and his adventures to find it. The book had me smiling from the beginning to the end because of the lovely quirky additives that sparked it to life. This is one book I shall be putting on my wish list…I’m sure you will enjoy it too!

Hi Nicholas, I can’t wait to read your children’s book to my youngest grandchild. He’ll love the idea that a smile is lost. I odered the book from CreateSpace.

I’m looking forward to hearing if he enjoyed it 🙂
